Early Life –

  • Shambhu Maharaj used to keep his own place in Kathak dance. He was the younger brother of Late Achchan Maharaj.
  • His father’s name was Kalika Prasad who was the younger brother of Bindadin.
  • He was a respected dancer of the Lucknow Gharana, who continued to work in the Indian Art Center till the last days of his life.
  • They had four children, two of whom died in childhood. On May 29, 1950, his respected brother and Guru Achhan Maharaj died. Shambhu Maharaj’s 5-year-old son died on the second day and his one-year-old son on the third day.

Career –

  • They said that dance should always be emotion-oriented, not rhythm-oriented, because without emotion, dance becomes lifeless.
  • Along with dance, he was also very proficient in Thumri singing. He taught Thumri to the famous students of Banaras.
  • Received from singer Rahimuddin. You used to sing Thumri while sitting and after that you would express its feelings through your body movements in such a way that the audience would be mesmerized.
  • He received many titles, such as Nritya Samrat, Abhinay Chakraborty, Padma Shri and President Award etc.
