Early Life –
(1). Radhika Mohan Maitra comes from a Bengali landowning family that has a history of patronizing music and that art. Presently it is in Talando of Tanor Upazila of Rajshahi District in Bangladesh.
(2) His grandfather Lalit Mohan Maitra was a tabla player, his father Brajendra Mohan played the sarod and his mother learned the sitar.
(3) Among those patronized by her grandfather was Mohammad Amir Khan, who served as Radhika’s mentor and principal teacher, although the disciple also learned other instruments and styles of music with his permission.
(4). In addition to his musical training, Maitra holds an MA in Philosophy. degree, awarded by the University of Calcutta, and L.L.B. law degree. He taught philosophy for a while and was also a noted musicologist, with several books to his name.
Career
(1). Maitra rose to prominence as a musician in the 1950s, when concerts were in demand in India and elsewhere in the world.
(2). In addition to radio singing, she performed in countries such as Afghanistan, Australia, China, New Zealand and the Philippines as part of cultural delegations organized by the Government of India, and she also performed in an unofficial tour of the US in 1975.
(3). From around the same time he gradually reduced his attendance, preferring instead to concentrate on teaching both sarod and sitar.
(4). His students were often obtained by a referral method, whereby a potential new disciple was introduced to someone who was already being taught by Maitra.
(5). In 1976, Radhika Mohan established the Mohammad Amir Khan School of Instrumental Music, dedicated to the development of young talents in the sarod and sitar to carry forward the banner of the Shahjahanpur Gharana.
(6). He started the ‘Rising Talents’ music conference in 1977, which focused on providing opportunities to young and talented artistes, irrespective of their gharana or guru, to perform before the music-loving audience of Calcutta.
(7). In July 1944, Maitra married Lalita Chowdhary, a lady from the “royal family” of Sushang. He died in 1981 at the age of 64 following an accident.
(8). Mohan Veena was invented by Radhika Mohan Maitra in 1948 and adapted to All India Radio in 1949 by Thakur Jaidev Singh, the then chief producer of All India Radio.
(9). In this instrument, the goat skin of sarod is replaced with wood and the bridge of sarod is replaced with surbahar bridge.
(10). He did several programs on Mohnaveena in All India Radio which are now available in public domain and are the property of All India Radio Archives.
