Family –

Father- Aashiq Ali Khan

Training and lineage –

  • Khan learned music from his father, Ashiq Ali Khan, who learned the sitar from 19th-century player Barkatullah Khan.
  • Descended from Masit Sen of Delhi, who was the inventor of Masitkhani Gat.
  • His name became synonymous with the senia style although he may have actually practiced an even more austere style than his predecessors in the gharana.
  • He abandoned much of the ornamentation of modern sitar technique, and adopted a clean, pure sound.
  • His aalap was constructed on the lines of dhrupad aalap, and his joda and jhala derived much from the Rudra Veena technique.

Career –

  • First a court musician from Jaunpur, Mushtaq Ali, left the court to pursue an independent career.
  • He began playing for All India Radio in 1929, and performed at the Sangeet Sammelan (music conference) in Allahabad in 1931.
  • He was considered the foremost sitarist in India for most of the 1940s and 1950s, following the demise of Inayat Khan of the Etawah gharana, and before the rise of the younger Nikhil Banerjee, Ravi Shankar and Vilayat Khan.
  • Device –
  • Mushtaq Ali Khan belonged to the Senia Gharana. He was the only surbahar player in India to play the been-ang with three mizraabs.
  • Khan Sahib had a lineage with the fifth Vani, called Dhandwani, named after one of his ancestors.

Student –

  • He taught many students including Debu Chowdhary who has started a cultural center in New Delhi by the name of “UMAK Center for Culture” with the aim of keeping Mushtaq Ali’s music and his thoughts alive.
  • His only expatriate student, Steven Landsberg, lives and teaches in the United States.
  • Mushtaq Ali Khan taught him the technique of the three mizrabs and their unique use in tar paran.
