Allauddin Khan, also known as Baba Allauddin Khan was an Indian sarod player and multi-instrumentalist, composer and one of the most notable music teachers of the 20th century in Indian classical music.

For a generation many of his students, across different instruments like sitar and violin, dominated Hindustani classical and became some of the most famous exponents of the form ever, including Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan.

Early life –

  • Ustad Allauddin Khan was such a person who himself had to suffer many hardships in learning music, but he used to donate education to the deserving very easily and generously and stay there and take music education.
  • He was not only a good player but also a skilled violin, surbahar and sitar player. Not only this, he used to play and teach all these instruments very well.
  • Ustad Alauddin was born in 1870 in Shivpur village of Tripura. Father’s name was Sadhu Khan and Baba’s name was Madar Khan.
  • His father had great affection for music. He used to play the sitar and had received sitar lessons from Qasim Ali Khan. Whenever Sadhu Khan used to play the sitar, the boy Alauddin would sit beside him and listen carefully and himself would start humming something. In this way, he got the inspiration to learn music from his father, which increased day by day.
  • His name was enrolled in a school, but he did not feel like reading and writing and left the school. After that, he had the desire to go to Calcutta to learn music.

Career –

  • Allauddin was very determined. He left the house and reached Calcutta. There was no work to fill the stomach, except to take free food with the beggars. There is an old Proverb “Merta Kya Na Kerta”. He was satisfied only after eating once a day. Luckily, he met Gopal Krishna Bhattacharya, from whom he started learning singing. Meanwhile, he continued to take lessons of Tabla and Pakhawaj from Nanda Babu there.
  • Gopal Krishna died after teaching for seven years. After a few days, he was introduced to Swami Vivekananda’s brother Amrit Lal Dutt, from whom he learned to play violin, clarinet and flute. Even after learning all this, his thirst for music did not calm down and he was always eager to learn something more.
  • He met Late Ahmed Ali Khan of Dumdum, Calcutta. He was a famous sarod player of his time. He suffered all kinds of hardships to learn from him and after doing great service, when Ahmed Khan was very pleased with Alauddin, he started teaching him Sarod. After some time, he took him to Rampur (Uttar Pradesh) and said that whatever I knew, I taught you, now you learn from Ustad Wazir Khan, after saying this, he left and left Alauddin to his fate.
  • His time in Rampur was also very painful. There was no arrangement for their living, eating and drinking. Somehow they would sleep in the corner of a mosque and eat whatever they could find. Sometimes you have to stay hungry too. Then he was so disappointed with his life that he even thought of committing suicide. Meanwhile, he met a Maulvi who filled his heart with so much enthusiasm that he gave up the idea of suicide and went ahead again to fulfill his purpose.
  • He tried to meet Wazir Khan but failed, then he took out a trick. The coach of the Nawab of Rampur was passing one evening. Then Alauddin stood in front of him. The cart stopped and he was brought before the Nawab in Darbar.
  • He narrated all his incidents which impressed Nawab Saheb a lot. He made arrangements for Alauddin’s stay and food. And called Wazir Khan and asked him to teach music. This gave you some satisfaction. You started visiting his house everyday, but did not get to see him even a single day. Thus many months passed.
  • At last Wazir Khan called you to him one day and said that till now I was taking your test, you have succeeded in it. I will give you music lessons. Alauddin was very happy to hear this. He learned to play Sarod, Sursingar from Wazir Khan and learned many  Dhrupad-Dhamar Bandish from him. In this way, he acquired musical knowledge by suffering a lot from many famous musicians. Meanwhile, the Nawab of Rampur returned home after taking higher education from abroad.
  • After seeing the foreign Vrindavan tradition abroad, Alauddin got the opportunity to play Bela Instrument  in the orchestra prepared at his place. Everyone was pleased with his Bela Instrument playing. From that time you started getting fame slowly, but the spirit of further learning did not diminish in you. From time to time you used to organize music programs at your residence and invite good singers and instrumentalists.
  • You used to listen to their program very carefully and after they left you would try to extract those things yourself. Thus he accumulated all of singing and playing.
  • One day when Wazir Khan told you that your training is now complete. Now the tour will be beneficial for you, so after taking the blessings of the Guru, you left Rampur and reached Calcutta.
  • There you gave your program and got appreciation. After a few days, you got a job in Maihar Riyasat, where you lived permanently.
  • While working in the princely state, you visited countries like Italy, Belgium, France, America etc. with Uday Shankar’s party. You had great interest in teaching. You taught sitar and surbahar to your daughter Annapurna, sarod to son Ali and sitar to Pandit Ravi Shankar.Apart from this, Ustad Alauddin Khan taught many disciples with generosity. He broadcast his program from many music conferences and different centers of All India Radio. He has also received the President’s Award.
